Adults with Baby Teeth

Are you an adult who still has some baby teeth? It’s unusual, but not an unknown situation. At the Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group in Texas, we extract and replace teeth that are compromised for whatever reason. Baby teeth in an adult mouth could certainly be a problem cosmetically, not to mention for hygiene and bite comfort, so we thought we should explore the situation more.

When permanent teeth push through, they cause the roots of the baby teeth to dissolve. Normally, the baby teeth fall out immediately before the emergence of a permanent tooth; when they don’t we call them “retained deciduous teeth.” Sometimes, the permanent tooth emerged in a radically different location than its baby counterpart, resulting in the patient having two sets of the same tooth. This would lead to overcrowding and the one that gets stuck in back would be very difficult to brush. The typical treatment is to extract the baby tooth and refer the patient for orthodontic treatment.

Sometimes, there simply is no adult tooth coming in. A small percentage of people are congenitally missing certain teeth, usually the upper lateral incisors. Many people dislike having a mix of baby and adult teeth, which is why they may want to get the baby tooth extracted and replaced with an implant or denture. Some orthodontic work may also be required to make room for an adult-sized crown, but we can provide a variety of restoration options.

Arestin to Treat Periodontitis

When the body develops a bacterial infection, we use an antibiotic to treat it. The same applies to infections in the mouth.  Doctors at Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group utilize arestin for patients with periodontitis who need a scaling and root planing procedure performed. Periodontitis is a chronic bacterial infection, caused by plaque, which has settled underneath the tooth’s surface below the gum line.

Arestin has the ability to reduce the severity of periodontal disease.  After a scaling and root planning procedure, the medicine in powder form is applied to the gums.  In a clinical study, when used in addition to scaling and root planing, arestin reduced harmful bacteria by nearly 2 times as much as scaling and root planing alone. This is because adding arestin to the mix disrupts the progression of periodontitis by specifically targeting the active infection.

If you have questions or concerns about the status of your periodontal health, please give us a call. To learn about the treatments we offer, visit FredrickShawDDS.com for more information.  To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw,DDS in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

Dangers of Tartar Accumulation

When we eat certain foods and beverages that contain sugars, these particles will remain in our mouths long after we’ve put them there. Bacteria thrive on these foods and produce acids that will attack tooth enamel. Plaque is a soft, sticky substance that won’t be eliminated unless we adequately brush and floss our teeth. If plaque isn’t brushed away, it will turn into tartar, which only Dr. Fredrick Shaw will be able to remove during a professional cleaning.

Unlike plaque, tartar is a mineral buildup that is easy to see above the gum line. The most common sign of tartar accumulation is a yellow or brown deposit between the lower front teeth at the gum line. Proper brushing, especially with a tartar control toothpaste, and flossing, are necessary to reduce plaque and tartar buildup. If tartar is left on the teeth, it may lead to periodontal disease which can cause the bone that supports the teeth to deteriorate.

Diabetes and Tooth Loss

Our mission at the Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group in Austin is to restore the teeth of people who have lost them. But we also care about prevention, and we don’t want to see our patients have relapses of gum disease. People with diabetes are particularly at risk for gum disease-related tooth loss, so it’s important for them to understand how closely oral health and the rest of the body are linked.

Gingivitis is inflammation of gum tissue. It occurs when there is an infection in a gum pocket, which triggers the immune system’s inflammatory response. Inflammation limits the spread of disease and makes cells more permeable to chemicals that white blood cells rely on, but it is painful and can damage tissues if it is prolonged. People with diabetes get inflammation more often and have more difficulty fighting infections. It is unknown exactly why this is, but high blood sugar is known to cause arteries to thicken.

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress into periodontal disease. At this point, the gum and jaw bone tissues are receding, leaving teeth vulnerable to coming loose. While we can replace teeth, implants need jaw bone tissue to fuse with. It is important for people with diabetes to get regular cleanings and periodontal therapy for tissue loss they have incurred. Fortunately, there is evidence that following treatment for gum disease, people with diabetes have an easier time regulating blood sugar.

Avoid Tooth Decay during the Holidays

We’ve given a lot of people new teeth at the Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group in Austin’s Rosedale neighborhood. Hopefully, our patients will be able to enjoy their implants and dentures for the rest of their lives. But prosthetic teeth are still vulnerable to tooth decay, and sticky, sugary treats abound during the holidays. We thought we should recommend how to enjoy food and drink safely.

Tooth decay is caused by acid that oral bacteria produce as a waste product. The materials of implants and dentures are not immune from acid, and food debris can get caught in them, just as with regular teeth. Sticky sweets like toffee and cranberry sauce are obviously likely to get stuck, but the residue from hard candies can also remain on teeth for an extended period.  Another common source of sugary residue is from drinks. Apple cider, eggnog, wine, and hot chocolate all tend to be drunk slowly, giving bacteria lots of time to metabolize them. Bacteria can metabolize starches, too, so debris from crackers, potatoes, and squash can fuel decay if it gets stuck in dental indentations.

Saliva washes away sugary residue, so it’s best to limit treats to full-sized meals when you’re producing more of it. If this isn’t realistic, you could also try chewing sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva production and remove some debris. While enjoying sugary drinks, alternate them with sips of water to remove residue. You can protect your natural teeth by drinking fluoridated water, so bring some bottles with you if you’re traveling to a house without it.

Sedation Dentistry

Dr. Fredrick Shaw, DDS utilizes sedation dentistry to provide a relaxing and anxiety-free dental experience. If you struggle with anxiety or are too afraid to visit the dentist, we have sedation options that might ease you back into the dental chair. There are different types of sedation that will vary between mild to moderate and we can discuss which option is best for you during an initial consultation.

Levels of sedation range from mild, to moderate, to deep, and are achieved through different types of sedatives. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, sedation is safe, but it’s important to discuss your questions and concerns with Dr. Shaw before your dental procedure. The most common form of sedation includes a sedative (nitrous oxide) that allows patients to drive themselves home after a procedure, but if you decide on oral conscious sedation, you may need to be accompanied to your appointment by a friend or a relative.

If you have questions or concerns about sedation dentistry, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at the practice, visit FredrickShawDDS.com for more information.  To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

Smoking with Sleep Apnea

Smoking will exacerbate any respiratory condition.  It is proven to cause snoring and lead to obstructive sleep apnea.  Patients struggling with sleep apnea should see the doctors at Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group for evaluation. We can help patients find relief from sleep apnea, but quitting smoking is up to you!  Smoking causes upper airway inflammation, meaning the swelling causes the airway to narrow and disrupts the nasal passage and throat.  This causes snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.  Cigarettes are highly addictive, and some smokers seek treatment for sleep apnea but continue to smoke. Smoking with sleep apnea not only puts more stress on the heart every day, but negates any treatment a sleep apnea patient is undergoing.

Habitual smokers may feel relaxed by one last cigarette for the day, but it actually creates more complications for restful sleep. Smokers can experience nicotine withdrawal overnight, causing more waking up and restlessness.  Quitting smoking cold turkey is very difficult, but even lessening the amount of cigarettes or avoiding smoking at nighttime can help you achieve more restful sleep.  Most smokers cannot quit on their own or on their first attempt, so don’t get discouraged!

If you have questions or concerns regarding sleep disorders, please give us a call. To learn more about sleep apnea treatments we offer, visit FredrickShawDDS.com for more information.  To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

Drinking Water for Oral Health

Drinking water is important for your health at all ages.  Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group has seen adult patients that are guilty of not drinking enough water, so we know it can be tough to monitor if kids are getting enough too.  We want to encourage you and the kids in your family to stay hydrated and healthy!

We all know kids love drinking juice and soda, but we forget that these beverages leave unwanted sugar behind on the teeth.  The type of bacteria that causes cavities feeds on sugar, and produces acid that wears away enamel. Enamel is not replaceable, so it’s important to take care of it even from a young age.  When kids drink juice or soda, it is helpful just to drink some water afterwards to dilute acids and wash away food particles and residue. You and your children should be drinking at least eight 8oz glasses of water each day.  Drinking tap water with fluoride is important to help prevent cavities.  If you’re worried that your children may not be drinking enough water, come see us to discuss tips that might help them drink more!

Chronic Halitosis

Bad breath is embarrassing, especially when you aren’t the first to notice. Also known as halitosis, bad breath isn’t typically a problem unless it becomes chronic. Chronic bad breath is usually caused by poor oral hygiene habits. It can also be a result of dry mouth, dental problems such as gum disease, or an underlying medical condition. If your bad breath has you feeling self-conscious, schedule a consultation with Dr. Fredrick Shaw to get the problem under control.

If you don’t brush and floss your teeth daily, food particles can remain in your mouth, promoting bacterial growth between teeth, around the gums, and on the tongue. This causes bad breath. Bad breath odors vary, depending on the source or the underlying cause. Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum disease. If you have bad breath, review your oral hygiene habits. If your bad breath persists after making changes, visit us as soon as possible.

If you have questions or concerns regarding halitosis or oral care, please give us a call. To learn about other services we provide at our practice, visit www.fredrickshawdds.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

Oral Thrush

Oral thrush is a common condition that usually doesn’t cause any serious problems for patients with strong immune systems. Oral thrush is more common in people with diabetes or those who were dentures, but it can also occur in children. If you are diagnosed with oral thrush, Dr. Fredrick Shaw may recommend antifungal mouth rinse. But before we discuss treatment, let’s discuss how oral thrush develops.

Small amounts of the candida fungus are in our mouths, digestive tracts, and skin. They are supposed to be there, but oral thrush occurs when a yeast infection develops on the inside of the mouth and causes the fungus to grow out of control. Thrush can be caused by a number of things, such as uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, dry mouth, or an HIV infection. If you experience pain when you swallow, a feeling of something caught in your throat, or a fever, you should schedule an appointment with us immediately so we can diagnose you and develop a treatment plan. You can reduce your risk of this condition by practicing proper oral hygiene, adding probiotics to your diet, and visiting us for oral checkups twice a year.

If you have questions or concerns regarding oral thrush, please give us a call. To learn about other services we provide at our practice, visit www.fredrickshawdds.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

Dental Implants

The staff of Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group replace teeth and restore patient smiles with dental implants. Implants are a permanent restorative option for teeth that are missing or have been extracted.  They look and feel like natural teeth, and are the most permanent and efficient means of replacing lost teeth.

An implant is placed over a series of appointments because of the healing time required.  Implants are titanium screws inserted through an incision in the gum. Over a period of 3-6 months, the jaw bone heals around the implant to become a solid, stable base for the new tooth. During this time a patient is fitted with a temporary crown, and a custom crown is created to match their smile perfectly.

After the jaw bone and gums have healed appropriately, the custom crown is placed in a second minor procedure.  The doctor may need to expose the head of the implant by removing some gum tissue, and the crown will be screwed to the top of the implant.  When this is complete the tooth looks like part of the natural smile, and with proper care will last for decades!

Oral Conscious Sedation

The staff of Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group have seen many patients who experience some level of anxiety with each dental procedure or appointment. Some patients have had negative experiences with dental procedures that make them anxious, and others may have a sensitive gag reflex that has always made dental work dreadful.  We understand why a dental appointment could be intimidating, but do not want to see patients delaying treatment because of these fears.  Oral conscious sedation is an option we recommend for patients experiencing dental anxiety.

Oral conscious sedation is administered by taking a pill orally (usually Valium) before a procedure.  The light sedative relaxes the patient but does not ‘knock out’ the patient, as they remain conscious.  They are brought to an extremely relaxed state, and when the dentist begins working, local anesthetic is still used at the site of the procedure.  The combination of oral conscious sedation and local anesthetic means the patient can stay relaxed and usually allows the dentist to complete more work in one session.  This makes a more pleasant experience for an anxious patient, and can even mean less dental appointments overall!

Tooth Extraction

Having a tooth extracted can seem like a scary process. You’re already aware that it involves cutting through the gum, removing the tooth with pliers, and sealing it up with sutures. Though this is true, Dr. Fredrick Shaw of Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group is here to guide you through every step of the tooth extraction process, beginning with sedation options.

Once the patient and Dr. Shaw decide on a sedation option, the tooth extraction process will begin. There is little to no preparation for a tooth extraction, aside from the X-rays he will take before the day of surgery. Depending on whether the tooth is visible or impacted, the procedure will either be a simple extraction or a surgical extraction. A simple extraction requires a local anesthetic which numbs the area around the tooth, so the patient feels slight pressure, but no pain, while a surgical extraction requires the patient to remain unconscious during oral surgery.

If you have questions or concerns about tooth extraction, please give us a call. To learn more about services we provide at the practice, visit FredrickShawDDS.com for more information.  To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

Fluoride

You may be familiar with fluoride if you received fluoride treatments as a child. Fluoride is known as nature’s cavity fighter because fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that protects tooth enamel. Every day, minerals are added to the teeth and lost, from the enamel layer due to the foods and beverages we consume, and the status of our oral care routine. Dr. Fredrick Shaw is more likely to recommend fluoride to cavity-prone children, but it can be recommended to cavity-prone adults as well.

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making tooth enamel more resistant to acid attacks from plaque and sugars in the mouth. Fluoride will be a routine part of an oral exam until a pediatric patient no longer requires them. In addition to topical fluoride that is found in the dental office, Fluoride can be found in the water we drink, the foods we eat, and in toothpaste and mouthwash. To discuss fluoride with Dr. Fredrick Shaw of Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group, schedule a consultation today.

Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is the term for removing excess gum tissue from the surfaces of teeth.  The doctors of Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group remove gum tissue from patient’s mouths for aesthetics and for function.  We see many patients unhappy with their smiles, and even patients without any damage to their teeth feel like their gums keep them from enjoying their ideal smile.  When gum tissue is removed for function it is typically for making room to affix a restoration, like a crown, to a tooth.

Whether a crown lengthening procedure is done for function or aesthetics, it is a simple in-office procedure. Local anesthetic is used while your dentist removes excess gum tissue with either a scalpel or laser tools.  If tissue is being removed for a restoration to fit you may only require tissue to be removed from a couple of teeth.  Some people have more gum tissue than others and it results in a gummy smile, which can be corrected throughout the entire mouth.  The result is a visually pleasing ratio of teeth to gums that creates an even smile!

Makeover Your Smile With Veneers

Patients are always asking the doctors at Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group about the latest cosmetic solutions for their teeth.  Some fixes are recommended just to repair damage or just to whiten, but veneers are the best way to give your smile a total makeover. Veneers are thin ceramic shells that bond directly to the surface of your teeth.  This gives you the opportunity to completely change the appearance of your smile and still look natural.  Patients with cosmetic issues like staining, cracked or chipped teeth, and even crooked teeth and small gaps can achieve a dazzling smile with veneers.

A patient can have a brand new smile using veneers in two to three visits!  First, your dentist will discuss the shape and look you want for your new smile.  Then an impression of your teeth is taken in order to custom fit the final product to the surfaces of your teeth.  The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where your custom veneers will be fabricated, which may take up to two weeks.  On your final visit, the veneers are bonded to your teeth for you to wear and enjoy!

To learn more about veneers and all the services available at the practice, visit FredrickShawDDS.com for more information.  To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

Oral Appliances For Sleep Apnea

If you are suffering from sleep apnea and have yet to find relief should visit Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group and see if a COAT device is the solution to your sleep woes.  The most common treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure machine.  These work by forcefully pumping oxygen into the patient’s mask and up the nose.   CPAP machines are effective, but some patients find the mask uncomfortable or overwhelming.  Continuous open airway therapy (COAT) devices work by aligning the jaw stabilizing the mouth to preserve the openness of the airway.  This helps get maximum oxygen flow without a machine.

We are happy to recommend oral appliances for patients who will benefit from this treatment.  These devices vary in size and design, but each style is meant to stabilize the jaw and control the tongue to keep the airway open.  A consultation is the only way to find out which type of device is the best fit for you.  If you have questions or concerns regarding sleep disorders, please give us a call. To learn more about sleep apnea and treatment, visit FredrickShawDDS.com for more information.  To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

What Is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw bone (mandible) to the temporal bones in your skull, in front of each ear.  A general term for any problem or issue with this joint is temporomandibular disorder, or TMD. Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group can help patients prevent and recover from negative effects of TMD.

Patients that grind or clench their teeth often end up with a sore jaw.  Other patients experience injuries with facial trauma that cause jaw pain, or result in the patient feeling their jaw gets stuck or ‘locks’ in either an open or closed position.  A custom night guard keeps the jaw in a neutral position during sleep, and this helps many patients find relief from TMD symptoms.  For any pain, your dentist may recommend an over-the-counter painkiller or warm and cold compresses.  To prevent further discomfort, you may be assigned stretches for your jaw.

Whatever your symptoms, you don’t have to suffer with discomfort in your jaw.  To learn more about TMD and the services we provide at the practice, visit FredrickShawDDS.com for more information.  To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

Bruxism Causes and Treatment

Bruxism is the name for a condition in which a patient grinds his or her teeth while awake or during sleep. The teeth will grind and rub together as the jaw moves forcefully either side to side or back and forth. People who have bruxism may not even be aware that they have it that is until they notice jaw pain and stiffness, sore gums, or sensitive teeth. Once bruxism is diagnosed, Dr. Fredrick Shaw may suggest a night guard.

Teeth grinding commonly occurs at night while the patient is asleep. Many people have a mild case of bruxism that is mild and doesn’t require specific treatment. If the grinding is severe, Dr. Shaw may suggest a night guard to wear during sleep. A night guard will help alleviate pressure on the jaw and protect teeth from further damage. If bruxism is caused by a misaligned bite or broken teeth, Dr. Shaw may suggest orthodontic treatment or dental crowns.

If you have questions or concerns about bruxism causes and treatment, please give us a call. To learn more about services we provide at the practice, visit FredrickShawDDS.com for more information.  To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

Health Risks Associated with Snoring

Snoring is a nuisance to our sleeping partners (or us), but when does it become a cause for concern? Everyone jokes about snoring, and occasional snoring isn’t very serious, but when snoring grows loud and frequent, it can actually be a symptom of an underlying condition, such as sleep apnea. Snoring occurs when the flow of air through the mouth and nose is physically obstructed. To properly diagnose and treat this condition, it’s best to schedule a consultation with Dr. Fredrick Shaw of Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group.

If you or your partner is aware that you (or they) snore, don’t ignore treatment. Recent studies show that the intensity of snoring is associated with stroke, high blood pressure, heart disease, weight gain, and/or mental health issues such as depression. This is because snoring is usually linked to a sleep disorder, and sleep disorders host a variety of health problems. Depending on the severity of snoring, treatment may range from a night guard to surgery.

To learn more about services we provide at the practice, visit FredrickShawDDS.com for more information.  To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

Intraoral Cameras

Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group takes pride in offering the best dental care and the latest dental technology to our patients.  The intraoral camera we use is an exciting tool that allows the mouth to be seen from previously impossible angles. This technology has proven very helpful in capturing images needed for procedure approval from insurance companies, but it will also change a typical dental office visit.

The tiny camera’s view is projected onto a monitor, making the same angle of the mouth visible to both doctor and patient at once. These views can help patients who don’t know a premolar from an incisor describe an area or a problem more accurately.  Providing more details can also help a patient better understand and follow their dentists’ plan of care for their mouth.  We hope this technology engages patients and helps you and your dentist better understand how to care for your mouth together.

Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery

The staff of Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group sees many patients who are unhappy with their smile. The look of your smile includes your gums, and even patients without any damage to their teeth feel like their gums keep them from enjoying their best smile.  Some people naturally have more gum tissue than others and it results in a gummy smile, while others have less gum tissue that gives a look of elongated teeth.

We offer cosmetic periodontal surgery so that any patient can have their perfect smile.  Cosmetic periodontal surgery is a technical way of saying sculpting the gum line, and each procedure is different depending on the patient’s goal.  Soft tissue grafts can be placed to extend the gum line, or excess gum tissue can be removed to expose more tooth.  The result is a visually pleasing ratio of tooth to gums that creates an even smile! If you think your smile would benefit from cosmetic periodontal surgery, please contact us.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

When obstructive sleep apnea occurs, the muscles relax, your airway narrows or closes as you breathe in, and you can’t get an adequate breath in. Your brain senses this inability to breathe and briefly rouses you from sleep so you can reopen your airway. You may make a snorting, choking or gasping sound. Sleep is meant to be peaceful and consistent, to repair your sleeping habits, contact Dr. Fredrick Shaw, DDS to discuss treatment options.

There are two types of sleep apnea. Obstructive (OSA) is the more common of the two forms of apnea and is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep.  People who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea may not be aware that their sleep is being interrupted. Also, you don’t have to snore to have this condition so it’s important to seek treatment immediately.

Central Sleep Apnea

Central sleep apnea is a disorder in which a person repeatedly stops and starts breathing during sleep. Central sleep apnea is less common than obstructive sleep apnea, which is a physical obstruction of the airway that delays breathing during sleep. If you wake up feeling fatigued after a full night’s rest, consider scheduling a consultation with Dr. Fredrick Shaw, DDS to rule out sleep apnea.

In central sleep apnea, breathing is regularly disrupted during sleep because of the way the brain functions. The symptoms remain the same; therefore, if you experience morning headaches, restless sleep, or chronic fatigue, it’s important to receive a proper diagnosis and explore your treatment options.  When central sleep apnea occurs, you may awaken with shortness of breath or have a difficult time getting to sleep or staying asleep.

Crowns Restore Smiles

Crowns are a common restorative option to repair teeth with a significant amount of decay or teeth that are chipped.  Before a tooth reaches the point of needed to be extracted or replaced with an implant, Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group can restore the tooth with a crown. The process of installing a crown is a standard and non-invasive procedure that can typically completed in two appointments.

The process of fitting a patient with a custom crown begins with the dentist removing any decay from the damaged tooth.  A crown fits over the tooth like a little cap, and to ensure a great fit for the crown, the dentist may need to contour the tooth that remains.  When the tooth has been prepared, an impression of the mouth is taken and sent to a dental laboratory for the custom product to be fabricated.  Once the custom crown is made, it is cemented into place by the dentist at a second appointment.

Flossing Properly

At Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group, we want to see the families we provide for continue healthy oral care routines at home.  Regular flossing is essential to maintaining oral health and you should floss once a day, either before or after brushing. Remember these tips to floss effectively:

  • A strand of dental floss about 18 inches long allows you to wrap the ends of the floss around a finger on each hand. This gives you excellent control over the portion of floss you are using.

  • The proper technique to flossing is sliding the floss between the teeth and rubbing the floss back and forth up until you reach your gums.

  •  Pushing at your gums too hard with floss can damage your gum line and isn’t necessary to floss properly. Gently rub the floss up to one gum, then down and back up towards the other.

  •  As you move on to the next tooth, adjust the floss to expose an unused portion. Repeat this rubbing motion between each tooth and dispose of the floss once you are finished.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay comes in the form of cavities, which occur when specific types of bacteria produce acid that destroys tooth enamel and the underlying dentin. Tooth decay can be a problem for children, teenagers, and adults. When we consume food and beverages that contain sugar, we increase our risk of developing cavities if we don’t adequately brush away the plaque that causes them. To keep your teeth healthy and free of decay, it’s important to maintain a rigorous oral care routine while visiting Dr. Fredrick Shaw twice a year for routine cleanings.

Cavities are most common among children, but they can develop in adults as well. If a patient doesn’t consistently brush and floss his or her teeth, the stickiness of plaque will produce harmful acids that attack and wear down tooth enamel. Once enamel has been destroyed, it will not fix itself and you may need dental bonding or fillings to repair it. To prevent decay at home, brush with fluoride toothpaste as fluoride helps to strengthen the teeth.

Teeth Whitening Advantages

Brushing and flossing on a daily basis will assist in keeping your teeth white, but sometimes they need an extra push. Dr. Fredrick Shaw offers teeth whitening services to patients who desire a whiter smile in a flash. Over time, our teeth may appear lackluster due to foods and beverages we consume and lifestyle factors such as smoking. If you’re considering whitening your teeth professionally, schedule a consultation with us.

Teeth will change color if we consume too much coffee, wine, and iced tea because the pigments in these beverages attach themselves to tooth enamel. Additionally, tobacco use will create stubborn stains that are hard to eliminate. Teeth-whitening is a simple process but not all whitening methods work on all teeth. To assure that whitening is right for you, it’s best to discuss the procedure with Dr. Shaw. If you decide that you are a candidate for whitening, the procedure may be completed in-office or with take-home trays.

If you have questions or concerns about teeth whitening, please give us a call. To learn more about services we provide at the practice, visit FredrickShawDDS.com for more information.  To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

Sleep Apnea and the Heart

Sleep apnea is not only a serious medical condition, but left untreated it can lead to a plethora of other health issues and is dangerous for the heart.  A patient with sleep apnea does not breathe properly during sleep, resulting in low oxygen levels throughout the entire body. Breathing supplies lungs with oxygen but also the rest of the body.  When there is a lack of oxygen, the part of the heart responsible for moving oxygenated blood to the organs and extremities is forced to work extra hard.  This can cause an enlarged heart and eventually heart failure.

Those living with untreated sleep apnea are at a higher risk of developing irregular heartbeats, and also have a higher risk for a stroke and heart attack.  Men with untreated sleep apnea are actually living with double the risk for a stroke.  If you have yet to find a solution for sleep apnea, please visit Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group for a consultation.

Athletes and Mouthguards

Mouthguards, also known as mouth protectors can be used for numerous reasons, but the most common is to protect athletes from dental trauma. Mouthguards help cushion a blow to the face and minimize the risk of broken teeth and injuries to the lips, tongue, face, or jaw. Dr. Fredrick Shaw DDS can design a custom-mouthguard for ultimate comfort.

Custom mouthguards are made from exact and precise models of an individual’s own teeth. They are also made of resilient and tear resistant materials ensuring a proper fit. A properly fitted mouthguard absolutely must be protective, comfortable, resilient, tear resistant, odorless, tasteless, and allow room for you to breathe. Because our custom-fitted mouthguards are made for your mouth and your mouth only, they are more reliable than over-the-counter mouthguards.

Toothbrush Abrasion – Don’t Brush Too Hard

Plaque is a soft, sticky film that sits on the teeth after we consume a meal. In fact, dental plaque is so soft, that it doesn’t require vigorous brushing to be cleansed away. If you’ve ever heard that too much of a good thing is bad for you, the same rule applies when brushing your teeth. Those who tend to “over-brush” or use excessive force while brushing, are likely to end up with sensitive teeth and gums. Dr. Fredrick Shaw encourages patients to take his or her time while brushing the teeth and most importantly, be gentle.

Toothbrush abrasion affects both the teeth and gums and is more likely to occur from brushing too hard, instead of not brushing enough. This is because vigorous brushing can wear down the enamel on the teeth and cause gums to recede. The solution to this problem is changing your toothbrush to one with soft bristles and brushing the teeth with care. You will not achieve any benefits from brushing too hard so don’t be afraid to take your time.

What is a Bone Graft?

Bone grafting has become a routine throughout medicine because of how it helps bodies heal.  A bone graft procedure consists of harvesting bone material from a healthy part of a patient’s body, and transferring it to a site that needs reinforcement. When a dental patient needs an implant to replace a lost or damaged tooth, a bone graft is used to strengthen the jaw. At Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group we perform bone grafts for patients to prepare them for a permanent tooth replacement.

If tooth loss or gum disease has left a portion of the jaw bone vulnerable, a replacement tooth cannot be placed until the jaw bone is strong enough to receive the implant. The doctor will harvest bone material from another part of the patient’s mouth and graft it to the jaw bone. This gives the deficient bone a replacement, and encourages growth of new material around the site. The healing process can take several months, and should be monitored by a dentist until the bone is strong enough to handle the placement of an implant.

Gum Grafting

Gum grafting is primarily used to treat receding gums, especially where tooth has been exposed. When plaque and bacteria build up at the gum line, the gums start to pull away from the teeth and stretch, forming little pockets around the buildup. Even when these little pockets are cleaned out, they remain at the gum line and cause the gums to recede.  The doctors of Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group can help you correct this by repairing deficient gums with a gum graft.

A gum graft procedure consists of harvesting healthy tissue from the roof of the patient’s mouth and transferring it to the site that needs reinforcement. This gives the deficient gum a replacement, and encourages growth of new material around the graft.  Gum grafting can be performed when receding gums become unsightly, or to cover teeth that have been exposed by receding gums and become much more sensitive.  If you think you could benefit from a gum graft, please contact us.

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

At the office of Dr. Fredrick Shaw, we support Oral Cancer Awareness Month to encourage patients to request oral cancer screenings nationwide, throughout the month. An oral cancer screening is an important part of a dental appointment because it can detect cancer symptoms in the earliest stage when they are easiest to treat. It’s important to know that just because Dr. Shaw may suggest an oral cancer screening; this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have cancer.

Oral cancer typically appears as a growth or a sore in the mouth that does not go away after a matter of weeks. However, we don’t encourage you to wait weeks if you notice a red or white patch of skin that is causing you pain. The most common symptoms of oral cancer include a lump or thickening in the cheek, a sore throat or the feeling that something is caught in the throat. In our office, we provide patients with oral cancer screening to detect cancer in its earliest stage when it is easiest to treat. It’s important to visit us every six months to reduce your chances of developing these symptoms. Treatment will depend on the patient, but radiation therapy and surgery are common methods of treating oral cancer.

Sensitive Teeth

If you brush your teeth too hard, your gums will eventually suffer. This is because the bristles from a toothbrush can cause gum sensitivity and this can make it difficult to consume hot or cold beverages. If the thought of eating ice cream, biting into an apple, or sipping hot coffee makes you cringe, it may be time to visit Dr. Fredrick Shaw of Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group for an oral exam.

Tooth sensitivity occurs when tooth enamel that protects our teeth becomes thinner, exposing the underlying surface. Sensitive teeth can make eating and drinking hot/cold beverages a painful experience and the cause is usually due to lack of oral hygiene habits. It’s important to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day to remove food particles that can cause bad breath and periodontal disease.

If you have questions or concerns regarding tooth sensitivity, please give us a call. To learn about other services we provide at our practice, visit www.fredrickshawdds.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

Scaling and Root Planing

Gingivitis is the most common form of gum disease and is fortunately easy to treat.  However, when left untreated it progresses into periodontitis, which causes permanent damage.  Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group offers scaling and root planing, two parts of a deep-cleaning procedure meant to stop gum disease in its tracks.

Scaling and root planing is a simple and non-invasive procedure done in the office.  It begins with scaling, the term for the dentist removing plaque and tartar from the surface of the tooth all the way down to the gums. Depending on the case, a dentist may recommend completing this process over two appointments, and a patient may request local anesthetic.  This is followed by root planing, which means minor contouring to the surface of the tooth near the root.  When gums have a clean, smooth surface to reattach to, new growth of tissue is encouraged and gums heal giving the patient a clean slate against gum disease.

The Importance of Regular Cleanings

Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group encourages patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for biannual professional cleanings.  The Academy of General Dentistry recommends you have a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months. Even when you regularly brush and floss, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional.

It’s important to see a professional regularly to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be neglecting an area in the mouth or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine. At a cleaning, a hygienist uses professional tools to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria build-up from your teeth that is too tough to remove on your own.  The teeth above and below the gum line are both thoroughly cleaned with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. After the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, the hygienist flosses between every one of your teeth and may apply fluoride if recommended by the dentist. If you need your teeth cleaned, don’t wait any longer!

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars to enter our mouth as an adult. Wisdom teeth don’t always erupt, however, and when they don’t they remain impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth mean that the teeth are dormant under the gum and they don’t plan on waking up anytime soon. If your wisdom teeth are impacted, Dr. Fredrick Shaw of Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group will likely suggest extraction to avoid further complications.

Impacted wisdom teeth don’t always cause symptoms. A person may feel immense pain or no pain at all. Impacted wisdom teeth can be problematic because as they attempt to erupt, they may appear angled, and this can cause damage to surrounding teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth also pose a risk for infection, and this can make it difficult to open the mouth and may cause swelling around the jaw. Not all patients need to have their wisdom teeth extracted, but it is a safe bet to have them removed.

If you have questions or concerns regarding wisdom teeth or wisdom teeth extraction, please give us a call. To learn about other services we provide at our practice, visit www.fredrickshawdds.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Fredrick Shaw in Austin, TX, call 512-451-7491.

Intruded Teeth

As a dentist who specializes in prosthodontics and member of the International Academy of Gnathology, Dr. Frederick Shaw of the Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group treats patients who have suffered from a variety of dental injuries. Among those injuries are intruded teeth, which are teeth that have been pushed back into their sockets. Treatment for these injuries varies widely depending on the situation, but surgery may be required for severe cases involving permanent teeth.

Intruded teeth can re-erupt on their own, particularly if they are baby teeth or the patient is young. In other cases, they can be repositioned with orthodontics. But if they are severely intruded or the surrounding structures have been damaged, surgery is necessary in order to reposition them and ensure the jaw bone heals properly. The repositioning will be done using forceps and the doctor’s fingers and the gums will be sutured afterward. A splint will be necessary for a few weeks to keep the affected tooth and those surrounding it in position, but the splint will typically be temporary and be removed after just one or two weeks along with the sutures. In cases involving permanent teeth, it will also be necessary for the patient to get a root canal.

GERD and Sleep Apnea

When we repair and replace teeth at the Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group in Austin, we are often fixing damage caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Acid reflux causes enamel erosion on the back teeth, making them more sensitive. In order to prevent it, patients need to understand how it has been linked to another disease with dental repercussions, obstructive sleep apnea.

The two diseases are often comorbid and mostly occur in people who are overweight. It is possible that one contributes to the other. When people suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, their bodies move their jaws in an attempt to keep their airways open. They may be doing this in response to the acid in their esophagi obstructing air flow. When people grind their teeth in their sleep, enamel is lost and they often wake up with pain in their teeth, as well as their jaw, head, and neck muscles. This pain may also cause them to get less or lower-quality sleep.

Recent studies have shown that common treatments for sleep apnea, such as CPAP machines, also reduce the frequency of acid reflux, leading scientists to think sleep apnea may cause the brain to send a signal which contributes to acid reflux. Other things people can do to reduce their risk of acid reflux include cutting back on dairy and fatty meats, as well as onions, garlic, alcohol, and chocolate, and avoiding large meals before bed.

Dental Implant Benefits

If you are lacking self-esteem due to missing teeth, Dr. Fredrick Shaw has several restorative treatment options for patients to choose from. The most common method is dental implants. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are an excellent option for people who have lost teeth from trauma or decay.

The dental implant process will be tailored to meet your needs. You will need to schedule a consultation with Dr. Shaw beforehand because you must have adequate tooth structure and healthy gums to support the implant. If you are missing a single tooth, one implant and a dental crown can restore the tooth to its natural function. If you are missing several teeth, an implant-supported bridge may be necessary. If you decide that implants are right for you, Dr. Shaw will work closely with you to ensure that you are comfortable with your decision.

If you have questions or concerns regarding dental implants or restorative dental services, please give us a call. Bite Collapse

The main advantage of coming to the Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group in Austin is getting care from specialists who understand how to do complicated jaw reconstruction. One of the most severe results of the absence or wear of multiple teeth is the loss of vertical dimension in the bite, or bite collapse, which is why we want patients to feel that they have a solid understanding of it.

Loss of vertical dimension can occur when the teeth themselves have lost height or the back ones are missing altogether. This would cause the remaining teeth in front and their supporting bone structure to tilt outward as they are subjected to bite force, which may result in a bite that is open as well as short. Besides making chewing difficult, the loss of vertical dimension is a source of pain in the temporomandibular joint, which can radiate to the rest of the head, neck, and shoulders, and causes the face to appear wrinkled and the chin to be disproportionately large to the mouth.

Fixing bite collapse requires careful attention to both functional and aesthetic issues. To ensure extensive restorations are the proper height, the patient will often first wear temporary crowns or veneers. If they have been without teeth for a long period, it may be necessary for them to undergo bone grafts in preparation for implant-supported bridges or dentures. During this period, we will work closely with the patient to ensure that the final restorations are the desired color and the height of the patient’s face will be returned to its healthy appearance.

Examining Cracked Teeth

At the Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group, we’ve devoted our practice to assisting patients with cracked and chipped teeth. Cracks can cause many different kinds of damage, and depending on what has happened, different treatments will be needed. But it is often the case that it is difficult to determine exactly how severe a crack is without very thorough testing.

The least dangerous types of cracks are called craze lines. They look unpleasant, but occur naturally and are too shallow to compromise the integrity of the tooth structure. However, a tooth that is truly cracked at the crown or root requires urgent treatment. Often, cracks will not appear on x-rays. In order to determine how far down the tooth a crack goes, it may be necessary for a dentist to probe it and have the patient bite down on something and report their comfort while we observe their bite function. Sometimes, it may be necessary to remove fillings to get a better view. When investigating cracked roots, cutting a flap in the gum tissue may be necessary. While we sympathize with patients’ frustration with these tests, it is vital to their health to determine whether their dental pulp has become infected before a new dental crown can be made, as well as whether they will need a full implant. To avoid cracking, do not chew ice or anything similarly hard and ask your general dentist for help with nighttime tooth grinding.

Causes of Cavities

Cavities are a form of tooth decay that is caused by specific types of bacteria. Though cavities are common in children, they can form in adults as well. If a patient has a diet that is high in sugar and carbohydrates, they increase their chances of developing cavities. Though Dr. Fredrick Shaw, DDS has filling options to repair the tooth or teeth that have been decayed, he would much rather his patients practice prevention.

If a cavity is in its early stages, a patient may feel no pain at all. After time passes, however, the teeth may become sensitive to hot and cold beverages. To prevent cavities, it’s important to visit our office twice a year for professional cleanings and oral exams in addition to brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Cavities that are diagnosed in the early stages are reversible, but if harmful acids continue to attack the tooth or teeth, Dr. Fredrick Shaw, DDS will need to take additional steps to correct the problem.
