April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

At the office of Dr. Fredrick Shaw, we support Oral Cancer Awareness Month to encourage patients to request oral cancer screenings nationwide, throughout the month. An oral cancer screening is an important part of a dental appointment because it can detect cancer symptoms in the earliest stage when they are easiest to treat. It’s important to know that just because Dr. Shaw may suggest an oral cancer screening; this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have cancer.

Oral cancer typically appears as a growth or a sore in the mouth that does not go away after a matter of weeks. However, we don’t encourage you to wait weeks if you notice a red or white patch of skin that is causing you pain. The most common symptoms of oral cancer include a lump or thickening in the cheek, a sore throat or the feeling that something is caught in the throat. In our office, we provide patients with oral cancer screening to detect cancer in its earliest stage when it is easiest to treat. It’s important to visit us every six months to reduce your chances of developing these symptoms. Treatment will depend on the patient, but radiation therapy and surgery are common methods of treating oral cancer.
