Porcelain Veneers

We here at Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group want you to be confident in your smile. If you’re worried about your teeth color, shape, or alignment, consider Porcelain Veneers. Dr. Frederick Shaw offers these cosmetic services and more to his patients.

Our veneers are made of a thin layer of durable porcelain that replicates natural tooth enamel. When bonded to your teeth veneers create a whole new smile. The first step when choosing veneers is understanding exactly what you want your new smile to look like. Color is one of the biggest factors to choose from. Veneers can come in all shades of white, from natural to Hollywood-level brightness. Various sizes and shapes are available too. It’s recommended to do some research beforehand so you can decide what will look best.

Once a plan has been agreed upon, the next step is to prepare a mold of your teeth. This mold is sent to a dental laboratory to create your custom veneers. In the meantime, you will receive temporary veneers to wear. The permanent veneers will later be cemented onto your teeth. Just like with your natural teeth, make sure to brush and floss every day. Regular checkups with Dr. Shaw will ensure that your veneers and teeth are healthy.

Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group is located in Austin, TX. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Frederick Shaw, D.D.S., feel free to contact us through our website or by calling 512-451-7491.

Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is the term for removing excess gum tissue from the surfaces of teeth.  The doctors of Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group remove gum tissue from patient’s mouths for aesthetics and for function.  We see many patients unhappy with their smiles, and even patients without any damage to their teeth feel like their gums keep them from enjoying their ideal smile.  When gum tissue is removed for function it is typically for making room to affix a restoration, like a crown, to a tooth.

Whether a crown lengthening procedure is done for function or aesthetics, it is a simple in-office procedure. Local anesthetic is used while your dentist removes excess gum tissue with either a scalpel or laser tools.  If tissue is being removed for a restoration to fit you may only require tissue to be removed from a couple of teeth.  Some people have more gum tissue than others and it results in a gummy smile, which can be corrected throughout the entire mouth.  The result is a visually pleasing ratio of teeth to gums that creates an even smile!

Makeover Your Smile With Veneers

Patients are always asking the doctors at Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group about the latest cosmetic solutions for their teeth.  Some fixes are recommended just to repair damage or just to whiten, but veneers are the best way to give your smile a total makeover. Veneers are thin ceramic shells that bond directly to the surface of your teeth.  This gives you the opportunity to completely change the appearance of your smile and still look natural.  Patients with cosmetic issues like staining, cracked or chipped teeth, and even crooked teeth and small gaps can achieve a dazzling smile with veneers.

A patient can have a brand new smile using veneers in two to three visits!  First, your dentist will discuss the shape and look you want for your new smile.  Then an impression of your teeth is taken in order to custom fit the final product to the surfaces of your teeth.  The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where your custom veneers will be fabricated, which may take up to two weeks.  On your final visit, the veneers are bonded to your teeth for you to wear and enjoy!

Intrinsic Stains

At the Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group, we provide cosmetic treatments for our patients suffering from tooth discoloration. However, there is an important distinction to be made between stains that are caused by external factors and those caused by intrinsic factors which require the attention of a prosthodontist like Dr. Shaw.

Stains on the outside of a tooth may be due to long-term exposure to dark liquids and removed through whitening procedures. But if the stain is caused by damage on the inside, scouring the outside will make little difference. Intrinsic stains can be caused by an excessive amount of fluoride exposure, which the government has recently moved to correct, but they are usually due to trauma.

Dr. Shaw will need to use our advanced imaging tools to assess whether there is an active infection which poses a threat to the patient’s health. In those cases, doctor and patient will need to discuss treatment options such as a root canal or outright replacement of the crown. If the stain is due to an old injury or infection, adjusting the internal structure of the tooth may not be necessary, and the stain can be concealed through veneers or bonding.

Veneers to Restore Your Smile

At Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group, Dr. Fredrick Shaw, DDS offers veneers as an excellent way to redesign and reshape your entire mouth. Veneers are usually placed as an option for correcting stained, chipped decayed or crooked teeth. They are ultra-thin shells of ceramic (porcelain) or a composite resin material, which are bonded to the front of the teeth.

Veneers offer a conservative approach to changing a tooth’s color and shape and they generally don’t require the extensive shaping prior to the procedure that crowns do, yet offer a stronger most aesthetic alternative. In terms of the process to place veneers, it is a procedure that takes approximately two to three visits. The first step involves your active participation and you explaining to Dr. Fredick Shaw, DDS the goal you are trying to achieve. During this appointment, he will examine your teeth to make sure that veneers are appropriate for you and discuss what the procedure will involve.

If you wish to enhance the appearance of your smile or if you have questions about veneers, give us a call. To learn more about Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group in Austin, TX, call us at 512-451-7491 or visit our website, www.fredrickshawdds.com.
